What is OTP (Over-Temperature)?
OTP (Over-Temperature Protection) is the “thermal safety net” for your power station. It is a critical function of the BMS (Battery Management System) that monitors the internal heat of the unit and shuts it down if it gets too hot.
Lithium batteries and power inverters generate heat during use. If that heat isn’t managed, it can lead to thermal runaway (a fire that can’t be put out) or permanent chemical damage to the cells.
1. How OTP Works
The power station has multiple sensors called thermistors placed in key “hot zones”:
-
The Battery Pack: To ensure the cells don’t exceed their safe chemical limit.
-
The Inverter: To protect the MOSFETs and transformers that convert DC to AC.
-
The Charging Circuit: To monitor heat during fast charging.
The Action: When a sensor hits a pre-set limit (usually around 60°C to 65°C for the battery), the OTP will:
-
Increase fan speed to maximum.
-
If the temperature continues to rise, it will instantly cut off all power (input and output) to allow the components to cool.
2. Why does OTP trigger?
There are three main reasons your power station might hit “Over-Temp”:
-
High Ambient Temperature: Using the station in direct sunlight, in a hot car, or in a tent during summer.
-
Heavy Continuous Load: Running a high-wattage appliance (like a heater or hair dryer) for a long time. The inverter generates massive heat during this process.
-
Blocked Ventilation: If the cooling fans are blocked by a carpet, a bag, or dust, the heat has nowhere to go.
3. OTP vs. UTP (The Cold Side)
While OTP handles the “Hot,” UTP (Under-Temperature Protection) handles the “Cold.”
| Feature | OTP (Over-Temperature) | UTP (Under-Temperature) |
| Trigger | Too Hot (> 60°C) | Too Cold (< 0°C for charging) |
| Risk | Fire / Thermal Runaway | Permanent Lithium Plating (Death) |
| Common Cause | Direct sun / Heavy load | Winter camping / Storage in garage |
| BMS Action | Shuts down everything | Stops Charging (Discharging is usually okay) |
4. What to do if OTP is triggered?
If your screen flashes a Thermometer Icon or “OVER TEMP”:
-
Stop everything: Unplug all devices and the charger.
-
Move to shade: Get the unit into a cool, ventilated area.
-
DO NOT Force Restart: Do not try to turn it back on immediately. Let the fans run (if they are still spinning) or let it sit for at least 30 minutes.
-
Check the fans: Ensure no dust is clogging the air intakes.
OTP is the “Life Insurance” for your battery. It is better for the station to shut down and annoy you for 30 minutes than for it to overheat and cause a fire.
Is your power station fan running constantly, or has it already shut down? If you are using it in a hot environment, I can give you some tips on how to keep it cool, such as using a “reflective sunshade” or elevating it off the ground.
