What is UVP (Under-Voltage)?

What is UVP (Under-Voltage)?

UVP (Under-Voltage Protection) is a critical safety feature that prevents your battery from “bleeding out.” It acts as an emergency kill-switch that disconnects the battery from any appliances when the voltage drops too low.

If OVP is the “ceiling” that prevents overfilling, UVP is the “floor” that prevents the battery from becoming a brick.

1. Why is UVP so important?

Lithium batteries (LFP and NMC) are chemically sensitive. If their voltage drops below a certain point (typically 2.5V per cell), a permanent chemical reaction occurs:

  • Internal Damage: The battery starts to grow tiny metallic “whiskers” (dendrites) that can cause internal short circuits later.

  • Capacity Loss: The battery may never hold a full charge again.

  • “Bricking”: If the voltage goes low enough, the BMS (Battery Management System) may permanently lock the battery for safety, meaning it will never charge or turn on again without professional repair.

2. How it works in your Power Station

The BMS constantly monitors the “pressure” of the electricity.

  1. The Threshold: Once the battery level hits 0% (which is usually around 10V to 11V for a 12V system), the BMS triggers UVP.

  2. The Cut-off: It instantly shuts off the AC and DC outlets.

  3. The Reserve: Even when the screen says “0%,” the BMS keeps a tiny “emergency reserve” of power just to keep its own brain alive so it can still accept a charge later.

3. UVP vs. OVP: The Direct Comparison

Feature UVP (Under-Voltage) OVP (Over-Voltage)
Trigger Battery is empty / Voltage too low Battery too full / Charger too strong
Action Cuts power to Appliances Cuts power from Charger
Goal Prevent permanent battery death Prevent fire/explosions
Analogy A car running out of gas A balloon popping from too much air

4. What to do if UVP triggers?

If your power station shuts down and displays a “Low Voltage” or “UVP” error:

  • Unplug everything: Remove all appliances immediately to stop any “parasitic” power draw.

  • Charge ASAP: Do not leave a battery in UVP state for weeks. Because batteries naturally lose a tiny bit of charge over time (self-discharge), a battery sitting at the UVP edge can eventually drop into the “Dead Zone” where it can’t be recovered.

  • The “Jumpstart” Trick: Some stations in deep UVP won’t recognize a solar panel. You may need to plug it into a wall outlet (AC) for 30 minutes to “wake up” the BMS.

UVP is your battery’s survival instinct. It shuts the system down to save the expensive lithium cells from being destroyed by total exhaustion.

Is your power station refusing to turn on even after you’ve plugged it in? This could mean it has dropped below the UVP recovery threshold. I can guide you on how to try and “wake it up” if you tell me the brand.

This video demonstrates what happens to a lithium cell when it is over-discharged and how a protection circuit prevents the voltage from reaching the “point of no return.”
